Volume summary: Volume 4 of Act 2

The graphic novels in the canon consist of fifteen published volumes in print, a sixteenth volume complete and available and a seventeenth volume in progress on the web. Starting with the fourteenth volume, the story has now entered Act 2 and the volume numbers have started over at one. Volumes in Act 2 will be identified in the chronology by the act number, a dash, and then the volume number; for example, Act 2, Volume 1 will be numbered 2-1. Eventually, the volumes in the first part, Act 1, will be renumbered to match.

The chronology pages describe the comics to assist scholars in finding the page on which something occurred. For each comic, the chronology pages identify the characters that appear, actions taken, significant quotes, and other notes. Section titles are from the canon unless otherwise noted.

For a partial timeline of the events in the comic, see Internal Chronology.

For more information on the double-page spreads in this volume, see double-page spreads in Girl Genius.

For more information on special pages in this volume, see the list of special pages, notes, and annotations.

Seffie, Martellus, Lab Technician
Martellus would rather use Science to investigate why the sword of the Storm King is showing strange electrical activity than go to the party Grandma is throwing in his honor, but Seffie insists that he stop working and get ready for the party.
Martellus: "A party?! Nonsense! Look! The Sword of the Storm King is actually reacting to something! I've got to find out why! Just tell Grandma I can't possibly go to a party now!"
Seffie: "Listen to me, my darling brother—if you do not get dressed right now—I will strangle you myself to spare Grandma's aged fingers!"
Martellus: "Seffie—I am doing Science here!"

Agatha, Gil, Tarvek
Agatha, Gil, and Tarvek are attending a Halloween party. Gil and Tarvek are heatedly arguing, seemingly over the best way to make the punch. Agatha turns in surprise, to stare at a pumpkin on a table near her which is being carved into a jack-o-lantern…from the inside.
Text below page image: "It's the Halloween 2016 wallpaper! Below, you can download a high-resolution image in the size of your choice, or even a zipped file of all the different types." This seems to be a tribute to a Charles Addams cover for The New Yorker magazine from October 30, 1989. This cover shows a pumpkin in a pumpkin patch on a moonlit night, also being carved into a jack-o-lantern from the inside.

Note from Kaja Foglio at the bottom of the image on the Girl Genius website: "This week, Phil and I had our orange belt test for Kenpo…and somehow, between the punching, shouting, and tired muscles, we never managed to get Monday's page sorted out. We did, however, earn our belts, and also got this drawing prepped to share with you all. So it wasn't a total wash. If you like the lovely European Christmas Monsters, we've got a new shirt over at Offworld featuring the Krampus. Offworld's given us a special discount code which you'll find in the ad below today's art. —Kaja"

Note from Kaja on LiveJournal: "<3 So...long (looong) ago, Phil and I heard about the Namahage, and decided that every New Year, in Mechanicsburg, the Heterodyne goes around town with some Jägers in tow...asking if all the children in the house were behaving properly and such like. Then the whole Krampus thing hit the States...we had no idea! Now it's been years, and we still haven't gotten around to telling that story, and the story of how Mechanicsburg kept its traditions all that time when there wasn't a Heterodyne in town, but we'll get there someday. In the meantime, here's St. Nicholas and a Krampus who's recently seen a very exciting movie. --Kaja'

Phil (dressed and masked as a Plague doctor), Plague Pets
Phil is sitting at the drawing board, costumed as a plague doctor. There are three cats and a dog in the picture, all wearing similar masks. One cat perches on the back of the chair, another peers over the drawing board, and the third is sitting on Phil's lap. The dog is in the foreground with its tongue lolling out of its mouth, drooling (despite the fact that it is masked).

Since everyone in the Foglio household is ill, including Phil, he drew a page of filler art with himself as a plague doctor.

Note from Kaja: "Well, now Phil is also sick, which brings the tally up to...let's see...everyone in the house. He's drawn this instead of a comic, and a good thing, too, since our color artist Cheyenne Wright has no electricity. This is because the firemen messed up the wiring when they hacked a big ol' hole in the side of his house after the roof caught fire. Cheyenne and his family have already had the flu, so they spent last night at our house. They are all fine, but not terribly happy about the fact that their house is all smoky and has a hole in it...and no electricity. Adventures! --Kaja"

Kaja (dressed and masked as a Plague doctor), More Plague Pets
Kaja is sitting at the drawing board, costumed as a plague doctor. There are four cats pictured as well, all wearing similar masks. One, rearing up on the back of Kaja's chair, is wearing a hat; another, perched on the drawing board is holding a large fork; the third, in Kaja's lap, is holding a small scythe; and the fourth is sitting on the floor holding drumsticks, playing a "drumkit" made up of three human(?) skulls.
GREETINGS FROM THE HOUSE OF PLAGUE

Death
On page on drawing board.
Since everyone in the Foglio household is still ill, including Kaja, Phil drew a page of filler art with her as a plague doctor.

Note from Kaja: "Yes, we're still sick, and our color artist Cheyenne and his family continue to forge ahead after their house fire. Not much else to report just now, except that we're very close to getting the medals from the last KickStarter campaign in from the pin maker and out the door to our supporters. Hooray! --Kaja"

Martellus (shouted): "Smoke Knights! Subdue the revenants without killing them!"
Queen of the Dawn: "Tch."
Jaron: "That does seem needlessly complicated, Sire."
Martellus (to Jaron): "Jaron, I don't know who exactly is behind this little show—but a show it is, and all of Paris is watching. They will see how a King leads."
Martellus (shouted loudly, to crowd): "All who are loyal to the Lightning Crown—to me!"
Smoke Knights, Paris, Lightning Crown Note from Kaja: "We're getting somewhat better, still a little off, but able to get back to proper work. Cheyenne has his computer set up here next to Phil's drawing table, so we even get color! He's an impressive guy, Cheyenne is. --Kaja"

The parade includes a blimp with an illuminated message, a giant lion-like beast (with Martellus riding), a marching band, dancing girls, clanks, and soldiers. It is accompanied by fireworks. There is a spectacular electrical discharge from the upraised sword held by Martellus. It isn't clear if the "lion" is a float, a clank, or an actual animal.

Tarvek, Costumed Party Guest, (!)Colette
Tarvek looks on as Simon Voltaire destroys Andronicus Valois's weapons. To save her father from being killed outright by the enormous amount of energy he had to channel to accomplish this, Colette manages to channel some of it herself. She channels enough energy, in fact, to surround herself with a glowing aura and to cause her clothing and hair to smolder and start to burn. Tarvek objects that her efforts are hurting her, but Colette brushes off his concerns and states that she is gaining vast amounts of knowledge.
Tarvek: "The—the Platonic Solid and Archimedes' Lever—your father just melted them! But the power he'd have to—oh. He—he's…drained the city. The whole city. Uh…Colette? How is he doing that? All that power—even he—"
Colette: "Yes. The stubborn old fool—this is far too much for him. He knows that. What he just did nearly killed him—and he doesn't even seem to care. The only reason he's alive at all is that I've worked out how to share some of the power. It's taking everything I've got—but I can hold it for him. Keep him safe."
Tarvek: "—But it's hurting you!"
Colette: "Not too much. Not yet. —And, Tarvek…I'm learning. I'm learning everything."

Tarvek, Portable Castle, Colette (voice from out of panel)
Tarvek reacts with surprise and dismay as seemingly every alarm bell, buzzer, and siren in Paris start going off all at once. The Castle explains that Colette has recovered, learned of her father's death, and is not at all happy about it.
Castle: "The young Mistress is reviving. She, and the City, are now aware that the Master is gone—and they… do not like it."
Colette: "That, my little vandal, is putting it mildly."

Drusus Beausoleil, Colette
Beausoleil clamps his hands over his ears to shut out the sound of Paris "screaming" and commands the noise to stop. When it does, however, he is not reassured; but filled with a sense of foreboding. This feeling is almost immediately justified when an extremely angry Colette appears, her clothing in tatters and surrounded by a coruscating electrical nimbus, with an ominous warning.
[Sirens, buzzers, and bells are all clamoring at once.]
Beausoleil: "Aaah! Shut up!"
[All of the noise stops.]
Beausoleil: "…Ah—oh, dear. …Why does this not seem like a good thing?"
Colette: "Think of it—as a final moment of sanity."

The phrase "the City is screaming" was used by Beausoleil on page 101, panel 5, to refer to all of the bells, buzzers, sirens, and other alarms in Paris going off all at once.

Drusus Beausoleil, Colette
Beausoleil greets Colette with surprise and trepidation, but almost immediately adopts an air of bravado and warns her to to over exert herself. An angry Colette's only response is to snap her fingers. This is immediately followed by a series of scenes showing all of Beausoleil's bodies being destroyed in a remarkable (and noisy) variety of ways. Not only that, but each of these "deaths" is experienced by the apparently last Beausoleil, near Colette.
Beausoleil: "My—my bodies! You destroyed them—and I felt every one…"

Drusus Beausoleil, Colette
Beausoleil recovers enough of his his aplomb to tauntingly tell Colette that his true body is still safe, but Colette doesn't care because she has foiled his traitorous plot and avenged her father's death. She destroys Beausoleil's final body in Paris, blowing it to smithereens, and declares that Paris is her city now and she will defend it.
Beausoleil: "Heh. But you still haven't got all of me…my true body is no longer in Paris"
Colette: "The Devil may take your true body, you nasty little traitor. You thought you could kill my father and take his city for your masters? What, I wonder, will they do to you, now that you have failed?"
Beausoleil: "Oh…ah."
Colette: "You are not important enough to waste any more of my time. Get out. Paris is mine—and I will defend it."

Colette
Colette stands with her arms spread and raised and her legs apart, her back to the viewer. She is nearly completely naked, with just some remaining scraps of clothing covering strategic areas. Her hair is levitating in the aureole emanating from her, which is sending a glowing streamer into the sky. Answering luminous tendrils are rising from the tallest points of the surrounding buildings. Foreboding light fills the sky as Colette utters ominous words.
"Now, to begin—"
