OhShyd

Well, fooey! Dang corrosion anyway!

Somebody hasn't been studying their evil overlord manual. Why shoot at the chain??? 20px-1298786.png Rej¿¤¤? 04:44, June 27, 2011 (UTC)

well, othar needs to get the damsel into distress before he can rescue her, right? ^^ Finn MacCool 09:36, June 27, 2011 (UTC)

Well, that's two things I was wrong about. The chain was not strong enough to pull a twig off a bush and the Professors Foglio did not cutaway to another scene! Damn! And, likewise, blast! -- Billy Catringer 04:58, June 27, 2011 (UTC)

nah, you were only wrong about one thing. the chain snapped only because somebody shot at it. Finn MacCool 09:36, June 27, 2011 (UTC)
Lead bullets can only break iron if the iron has been weakened by something else. Even bronze would hold up pretty well to bullets fired from a distance. Had to have been corrosion helpin' out as it twere. -- Billy Catringer 14:44, June 27, 2011 (UTC)
who ever said that those were lead bullets? don't forget that this a sparky world.^^ Finn MacCool 21:07, June 27, 2011 (UTC)
Someone is shooting at Agatha, Violetta is collateral damage. But WHO? I thought the Castle squashed Merlot and Zola is under heavy guard at the hospital. Automatic weapons just aren't Othar's style and he wouldn't shoot his 'spunky girl sidekick'. AndyAB99 12:28, June 27, 2011 (UTC)
Vole, mayhap?--Bosda Di'Chi 14:23, June 27, 2011 (UTC)
Vole would be my primary suspect at this moment. With the Baron in the hospital recovering from his wounds and Gil "obviously" compromised, Vole would have good reason to think he could kill Agatha and get away with it. So, I think we had better check up and see who else it might be, given my record of reasoning things out ahead of the story. -- Billy Catringer 14:44, June 27, 2011 (UTC)
Can't be Othar. No grandiose speech anouncing his entrance. Could be Snaug trying to get rid of the competition. Werewolfboy 22:27, June 27, 2011 (UTC)
It's the sound effects I've been trying to sort out. "POW, POW, POW" and "TAKATAKA TAKATAKA" then "PAFF". I think the "PAFF" is the chain breaking, which would imply the "TAKATAKA" is bullets striking the chain, but there's only three "POW"s, which would be the shots, and four "TAKA"s. Anyone have any thoughts? AndyAB99 19:57, June 27, 2011 (UTC)
hmm, usually, "TAKATAKA" is the onomatopoeia for a firing machine gun/gatling. so i'd say there's someone using such a weapon off-panel (and aiming at something/someone off-panel). however, it's also possible that it's meant to be the sound of the chain rattling. Finn MacCool 21:07, June 27, 2011 (UTC)
Well, these are the sound effects previously used for atuomatic weapons fire in Girl Genius:
'ATATATATATATATATA'
http://www.girlgeniusonline.com/comic.php?date=20030110
http://www.girlgeniusonline.com/comic.php?date=20030430
'AT! AT! AT!'
http://www.girlgeniusonline.com/comic.php?date=20050408
'RATATATATAT'
http://www.girlgeniusonline.com/comic.php?date=20070119
'BRRRRRRRRTTT!' (it is a Gatling or chain gun) with 'PAF' for bullet impacts.
http://www.girlgeniusonline.com/comic.php?date=20090511
No 'TAKATAKA'. It's fainter print, like a echo or a secondary sound. AndyAB99 01:51, June 28, 2011 (UTC)

Phase one: Complete.
Phase two: Getting her down. (The key is to sever the chain at the proper arc of its swing.)

My interpretation (ok, guess) at the the sound effects:

Takatakatakataka - Eight round burst of automatic gunfire.

Paff! - someone slugged the shooter hard.

Paf! is the sound that a smoke knight grappling gadget gun makes when fired. 20px-1298786.png Rej¿¤¤? 22:40, June 28, 2011 (UTC)

Pow pow pow - three bullets hit the chain.

Snap! - the chain breaks.

I would like to point out there are a lot of people who died of underestimating what a lead bullet can penetrate, Just my humble opinion. Datkhound 04:06, June 28, 2011 (UTC)

Yep, given enough kinetic energy, just about any solid substance can penetrate anything else of practical thickness. Industrial water jet cutters in our world can cut just about any material up to quite significant thicknesses (though true enough they add abrasives into the water jet for most metal cutting, but for many materials they don't even add abrasives). --Zerogee 06:05, June 28, 2011 (UTC)
First and foremost, the chain was cut by a bullet because the plot required it. Authors, especially fantasy authors, are not always bound by the laws of physics.
Second, I guess we find out on Wednesday, 6-29-11, what is going on. Datkhound is implying there are two shooters. Why shoot at Violetta? The other three are easily more politically important targets. AndyAB99 12:52, June 28, 2011 (UTC)
What do you mean, find out Wednesday? With Violetta in mid-air and falling, and a number of people shot by an unknown assailant, it seems like a perfect time to switch scenes. Argadi 19:49, June 28, 2011 (UTC)
I didn't intend to imply two shooters. Three hits from an eight round burst is fine shooting with a hand held machine gun, Or is could be lousy shooting at a different target. We need to know who's shooting at what or whom to decide. But multiple shots were fired, and three struck the chain. Datkhound 21:38, June 28, 2011 (UTC)
Well, a scene change would be a good way to allow (off stage) a miraculous escape by Violetta.
AndyAB99 23:56, June 28, 2011 (UTC)

Two shooters? Then you think it was a conspiracy, instead of Oswald Vole acting alone?

What?

Too soon?--Bosda Di'Chi 00:53, June 29, 2011 (UTC)

Grappling guns go "choff." Someone has fired three shots (count the lines,) in an upward trajectory. These are either very bad warning shots, or they are aiming at a target above them. This could be Agatha, (suicidal, given that she is in harvester,) or at Gil or Tarvek. Violetta is indeed collateral damage. There will be no cutaway, since Violetta is not worth the suspense (sorry.) Vole is unlikely. Wolfenbach troops have not yet been told to enter the building, and Vole is not likely to disobey. Additionally, regardless of who he's shooting at, Gil seems to be in his line of fire. Definately not Othar. Zola's surviving henchmen? (Or henchman? I've lost count.) Should've been smashed by the castle. Other prisoners who think they can still collect a bounty? Frankly I don't see an obvious answer.Baby Rorschach 01:43, June 29, 2011 (UTC)

SmallAha

Three shooters plus Tiktoffen.

Looks like Tiktoffen got ticked off and took a course of his own setting and Vole works for him. Surprise! Surprise! Surprise! -- Billy Catringer 04:45, June 29, 2011 (UTC)
