Description Edit

Also known as mecha-narwhals, one of these devices burrowed up from beneath the courtyard of the Red Cathedral while Moloch von Zinzer and the Roving Band of Heroic Repairmen were making some repairs there. It soon became apparent that it was fleeing a squid or kraken clank, which strongly resembled the Castle's impertinent mechanical squid. Soon, more mecha-narwhals joined the battle .

These mecha-narwhals resemble the mechanical narwhal full of pirates that Sanaa mentions when she was catching Othar up on where she had been and what she had been doing since she had last seen him. However since the mecha-narwhals taking part in the battle in the courtyard of the Red Cathedral are apparently designed to operate underground and the pirate narwhal seems to be an ocean-going vessel/clank, it is not clear that they are related by more than a superficial resemblance.

Possibly relevant outside information Edit

"Submersible de terre" is French for "earth submarine".

When it first appeared in Jules Verne's novel, 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, Captain Nemo's Nautilus was likened to a narwhal. It encountered a giant squid in a very dramatic scene during the novel. The battle of squid versus narwhal-like submarine is iconic, and shows up in many drawings, engravings and even paintings.
