Girl Genius

That she is "early thirties" in age is a guess. Her father, after all, is old enough to have fought at the side of the Storm King 216 years earlier.

I wrote that in before MoP revealed his age to us. -- Billy Catringer (talk) 22:06, August 25, 2015 (UTC)

Cinq speculation[]

I haven't yet found a reference for Cinq other than Library lift attendant: "And- we were warned to expect young Mademoiselle Voltaire Cinq and the Lady Heterodyne?" . If it's only ever "Mademoiselle Voltaire Cinq", and not "Colette Voltaire Cinq", given that we know that the House Voltaire is… expansive , "Mlle Voltaire nombre" may simply be a way of specifying which Mademoiselle Voltaire you're talking about without being so gauche as to use the lady's first name. Let's nip this edit war in the bud[]

Anonymous user with IP# 192.184.143.185, I appreciate the fact that you feel you are correct and that you want to stick to your guns, but the rule for what people should be called on this wiki is "The overriding general principle for all character names is: If in doubt, call the character what the Foglios call him/her/it.", from the Girl Genius:Manual of Style. Admittedly, this document is out of date in many ways, sometimes badly so, but this rule still applies. This rule refers to the Girl Genius Complete List of Absolutely Everybody!, which has been defunct for quite some time, but it was a list maintained by the Foglios on their website that provided a sort of dramatis personae for the comic. The implication of this is that how the Foglios refer to their characters outside of the comic can take precedence over how they are referred to by other characters within the comic. 🔧

I have not removed or altered your edit at this time; I will consult with the other bureaucrats and administrators on this wiki and I welcome input from any other contributors. However, if your edit is changed again and you change it back a third time, the Colette Voltaire page may be protected and/or your IP# may be blocked. I greatly appreciate the contributions you have made to this wiki so far and I certainly don't want it to come to that; please consider this a friendly warning, even if I didn't manage to achieve that tone on my phrasing. -- 🔧William Ansley (talk) 15:05, 17 July 2021 (UTC)

I've trawled through Colette_Voltaire/Appearances, and as best I can tell, "Mademoiselle Voltaire Cinq" is the only time in the comic the 'Cinq' suffix is used. It's possible I've missed something, and maybe there'd be something in the novelizations, but without further examples, I don't think we can definitively say what it indicates. Zibbiz, thank you for doing that. There wouldn't be anything in the novels yet, since the fourth one has just caught up to the end of act 1. The big question is what the Foglios intended that line of dialog to mean. They are certainly not experts on the French language, French history, or French culture, so their idea of the significance of "Mademoiselle Voltaire Cinq" may be quite different from what a person who is, if not an expert, at least quite knowledgeable about those things, would understand from it. I'll send a email to the Professors now, asking about it, but I don't expect to get an answer. I don't know whether I have bothered the Foglios with so many emails asking questions over the years that I am considered persona non grata at this point, or whether they are just too busy to respond; but that fact is I haven't gotten responses to my last few emails asking them questions. -- 🔧William Ansley (talk) 18:11, 18 July 2021 (UTC)
I am perfectly content it remaining ambiguous - maybe it'll be cleared up at some point, but in the meantime, it's fun to wonder and theorize, without making any definite declarations. I'd rather save consulting The Word of God for bigger mysteries. Zibbiz (talk) 01:09, 19 July 2021 (UTC)
