Girl Genius

Creator[]

Although it would apparently make little difference to the plot, it seems to be the case that the weasels were created some time in the past and only recently repurposed as revenant detectors.

There actually is a known candidate for their creator, then: The former Spark who worked (and to a certain degree still does work) in small, furry animals, namely, Dr. Dimitri Vapnoople.

Which could lead to one or more other mad theories.

(On the other hand, there may be a canonical reference to the weasels as "recent" whereas Dim's loss of function is presumably not recent.)

Dr Vg cannot be the creator. While a theoretician, he lacks the Spark.--Bosda Di'Chi 12:44, April 23, 2010 (UTC)

Jossed; Doctor Bren was the creator of the wasps.

Probably Irrelevant Outside Information[]

Outside the world of Girl Genius, scientists at the University of Sheffield have developed a robotic cargo-screening ferret for conducting inspections at ports. The ferrets can detect detect drugs, weapons, explosives and illegal immigrants. The project is funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) of the United Kingdom.

Else-Fantasy-Universe Cognates[]

In the Star Trek universe, tribbles are "round, furry creatures emit cooing sounds while touched, which have a tranquilizing effect on the Human nervous system",[1]. In fact, these sounds are "said to endear them to most sentient races which encounter them, with the notable exception of Klingons",[2], in whose presence they "emit a loud shrieking noise".[2] Klingons react to tribbles similarly, e.g., "'Get out of here with that PARASITE!'" (Star Trek original series, "The Trouble With Tribbles")[2]

In a specific parallel to the use of wasp weasels to detect revenants, in the same episode "this same mutual negative reaction unmasks Arne Darvin as a surgically altered Klingon who had tried to ruin the Sherman's Planet Development Project." In the manga "Guns and stamp", the protagonist has an eight-legged weasel (known as pseudoweasel) as a pet
